You may use the network manager to setup your connection to the internet and establish a VPN.
If you want to connect to a wired network (LAN), click on the network manager icon in the status bar at the bottom right edge of the desktop and enable "Auto Ethernet". All required paramter will be fetched by DHCP. There is nothing to do for you if a DHCP service was discovered.
To establish a wireless connection (WLAN) click on the network manager symbol in the status bar at the bottom right edge of the desktop and choose the access point you want to use. A dialog to enter your login credentials will appear on the desktop.
If not any WLAN network was listed, no working WLAN hardware was discovered by the network manager. This may appear time by time for very new laptops.
To login at Wi-Fi hotpots (e.g. in a hotel) you have to request a website with JonDoFox browser without anonymisation proxy. The hotspot manipulates the DNS and will redirect you to the login page. You login credentials are stored together with your MAC address for future usage. After sucessful login you can start an anonymisation service (Tor or JonDo) and change the proxy configuration of JonDoFox or start TorBrowser.
To be able to login at a Wi-Fi hotspot, you have to disable some features of the live-dvd:
It is not possible to use restricted firewall configurations ("Tor-only" or "JonDo-only"). You have to use "Simple firewall".
You have to disable DNScrypt, otherwise the hotspot can't modifiy the DNS to redirect you to the login page. Before you establish the WLAN connnection to the hotspot you have to run "Applications - System - DNScrypt configuration" and disable DNScrypt.
If you wanted to use your login credentials more than once, you have to restore the original MAC addresses before you establish the WLAN connnection to the hotspot. This is done by "Applications - System - Restore MAC addresses" (see below).
Hint: you have to set a password for adminstration at startup to disable DNScrypt and restore the MAC addresse, because "root" permission are requiered for this steps.
Click with right mouse button on the network manager icon and choose the menu enty "manage connections". A dialog will appear on the desktop. Go to the tab "DSL" and add a new connection.
To create a VPN you may use the network manager too. Click on the network manager symbol in the status bar an choose "VPN connections". The network configuration dialog appears on the desktop. Add a new VPN, choose the VPN connection type and enter the login credentials. OpenVPN, StrongSwan, Iodine, vpnc and openconnect are supported by the live-dvd.
During boot the MAC addresses of the network interface are changed to a random vendor MAC of the same kind.
If you have problems with faked MAC adresses to connect to the network (may be, because of access restrictions implemented by MAC addresses or to login at WiFi hotspot more than once) you can restore the original MAC addresses. This is done by "Applications - System - Restore MAC addresses". A password for system administration is requiered.
