Perhaps one of the experts here can enlighten me...

From http://sockslist.net/articles/socks-myths.

The author is Wei Lu, the director of NEC USA's networking systems laboratory. He holds a PhD in electrical engineering from Texas A&M, and can be contacted at wlu@syl.dl.nec.com

MYTH #8

Quote:
It [SOCKS5] can't handle streaming applications or UDP.

Reality: This is another version-4-versus-version-5 myth. Socks v5 is specifically designed to accommodate streaming applications and the user data protocol (UDP) on which the applications are typically based.

I'm a bit confused; can SOCKS5 "accommodate" UDP? Neither JonDo nor Tor accommodate UDP for their SOCKS5 proxies but only TCP, right?

According to wikipedia:
Quote:
OpenVPN can run over User Datagram Protocol (UDP) or Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) transports, multiplexing created IPsec ESP tunnels on a single TCP/UDP port[citation needed] (RFC 3948 for UDP).[6]

What about VPNs?

Proxycap makes a Socksifer with UDP capabilities. But can UDP be utilized with JonDo, Tor, or OpenVPNs?

If not, will this technology be available soon?

UDP be utilized with JonDonym premium cascades with SOCKS support.

(Premium cascades with SOCKS support are labeled with red "S". At the moment all premium cascades have SOCKS support.)

Ah, I assumed SOCKS5 could handle UDP packets but I'm certain I have read on this forum or this website (in the past) that JonDo can only handle TCP. I think it might have been something to do with VoIP. So this confused me.

In addition, what confused me more was this:

Quote:
What about distributed denial of service attacks?
Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks typically rely on having a group of thousands of computers all sending floods of traffic to a victim. Since the goal is to overpower the bandwidth of the victim, they typically send UDP packets since those don't require handshakes or coordination.
But because Tor only transports correctly formed TCP streams, not all IP packets, you cannot send UDP packets over Tor.

I wonder what the Tor Project is referring to--Tor uses SOCKS5 yet it does not send UDP packets over Tor?

On the other hand, I've read in other articles that SOCKS5 can handle UDP.

So at that point, I didn't know whether JonDo was using only TCP or UDP as well.

Hence the question.

The problem did not depend on UDP. We have no analysis of the VoIP protocols. We are not sure if it is possible to anonymize VoIP. May be, there are problems in the protocol stack (like Bittorrent).

If you put an UDP data packet in JonDo, it will go to the mix cacascdes and it will leave the cascades at the exit mix. But this is not enough to stay anonymoums. (See: privacy attacks for bittorrent over Tor: http://hal.inria.fr/docs/00/47/15/56/PDF/TorBT.pdf )
