Have done some further testing. Same issue appears with using Agent newsreader client and proxifying through ProxyCap to use JD; so not confined to Thunderbird.

Any clues at all?

Error message from Agent:

"Server mozilla (news.mozilla.org)The connection was refused by the server."

From ProxyCap log "Socket error. Connection unexpectedly closed".
