Using (encrypted) USB Flash Drives

USB flash drives are recognized automatically when they are plugged in. They may be encrypted with dm-crypt or TrueCrypt in order to allow a secure data transfer to other computers or to save backups.

 

To unmount a USB flash drives you have to use the umount applet in the statusbar of the desktop (right bottom corner). Click on the umount applet and choose the device you want to close afterwards. By using the desktop icon to unmount the device you will get an error message.

Using Hard Drives within the Computer

The hard disks within the computer are not mounted at boot time. You can get it mounted and opened in the file manager conveniently with a double click on the desktop icon. Usually they are mounted in the directory "/media/...".

If you want to access NTFS partitions (Windows) of hard disks within the computer and write to them, support for this feature has to be activated. Run the "Disk Manager" (applications group "System"), choose the NTFS partition and click on the button "Edit".

You have to activate the driver "ntfs-3g" for mounting NTFS partitions with write support. Aferwards you can mount the volume.
