Answers

  1. How may I import my old Firefox bookmarks into JonDoFox?

    First, start your old Firefox profile using the profile manager. Then, save the bookmarks stored there into a file. Close Firefox and start JonDoFox. Open the bookmark management and import the saved bookmarks.

  2. A certain web site does not work as expected. What do I have to do?

    In most cases it will work to make the settings for JavaScript and Cookies decribed here .

    Where this is not sufficient, we recommend the following steps on the example of www.posteo.de:

    1. Cookie Controller: Click on the cookie icon and chose Cookies allowed for this session for posteo.de oder Cookies allowed for posteo.de

    2. Click on the JonDoFox icon, then on Settings and there, set Activate referrer management to OFF.

  3. How may I view web videos with JonDoFox?

    In order to keep yourself from having to activate the dangerous Flash in your browser, you should always download web videos to your hard drive and play them from there. This also saves you the additional data traffic which would be needed to view a streaming video again. JonDoFox contains with Unplug a download tool for doing this.

  4. I sometimes have to activate Flash applets. How may I get a better security thereby?

    If you just want to view web videos on common video portals, you do not need Flash in your browser. You should enable Flash in your browser only if you know what you are doing. Then, however, set at least restrictive security settings before.

    In order to prevent automaticed attacks by Flash on your system, you may execute Flash contents in virtual environments like VMWare or Virtual PC, or in a sandbox.

    Hint: A lot of websites show Flash applications only if you have previously allowed JavaScript for these sites.

  5. Surfing with JonDoFox I can go back only one website. How can I change this?

    This a security feature of JonDoFox to avoid the analysis of your session history by visited websites. You can change this behaviour by open the URL about:config and set the following variable: extensions.jondofox.sessionhistory.max_entries = 2

    The default value is 2. Increase the number to 5, 10 or 20 to store more visited webseites in your session history and you can go back more steps. Restart the browser to apply the changes.

  6. JonDoFox deletes my search queries immediately after submitting them. How can I disable this feature?

    Just type "about:config" into the URL bar in your browser and press RETURN. Set the following value to "false": extensions.jondofox.delete_searchbar = false

  7. I have set the updates of add-ons to "manually", but the server mozilla.org, eff.org and anonymous-proxy-servers.net are still contacted for update checks. How can I disable it?

    If you set the add-on updates to "manually" it doesn't disable the update checks and downloads of updated add-ons. Only the installation is done manually. Have a look at the Mozilla documentation about Disabling_update_checks_for_individual_add-ons. You have to open the URL "about:config" and add a new parameter for each add-on and set it to "false": extensions.<GUID>.update.enabled = false

    The GUID of the add-ons you may find at "about:support". If you disabled the automatically update for the JonDoFox-XPI you don't get a notice about a new version of JonDoFox or JonDoBrowser.

  8. By opening a SSL encrypted website I got the error "Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap".

    Because the protocol SSL v3 is broken it is disabled in JonDoFox. But very few websites don't support the new TLS protocol for HTTPS encryption. To open such a website you have to enable SSL v3. Just type "about:config" into the URL bar in your browser and press RETURN. Set the following value:

    For Firefox 17.0.x security.enable_ssl3 = true

    Firefox 24.0 and later: security.tls.version.min = 0

    After closing the website you should restore the JonDoFox default value "false".

  9. Firefox can restore aborted browser sessions. Is this also possible with JonDoFox?

    Yes. However, data about your visited websites will then be stored on your local drive. This setting is therefore not recommended. For all people, who would like to do this nevertheless: Enter "about:config" in the browser line and set the following values: browser.startup.page = 3
    browser.sessionstore.enabled = true
    browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once = false
    privacy.item.history = false

  10. How may I deactivate the browser history?

    The browser history is already deactivated in JonDoFox by default. That what you see in the address bar are just your bookmarks, for giving you faster access to them. From a security point of view there is no reason to switch off this behavior. However, if you are concerned (which is unsubstantiated after the current state-of-the-art knowledge of technology) that your bookmarks could be read by web sites, you should delete all your bookmarks and keep from creating new ones instead of fading them out of your address bar.

  11. Install error in Mac OS X: Saving the file profiles.ini failed.

    This error occurs if you have encrypted your user directory with FileVault. Instead the installation program for Mac OS X you may use the Linux installation program. Unpack the file after downloaded, open a terminal, change into the unpacked directory and enter: ./install_linux.sh

  12. JonDoFox shows "JonDoFox null" as part of the browser window's title. What has happened?

    You are probably using some other tools besides our JonDoFox, like Steganos' InternetSpurenVernichter. This program deletes, for instance, the JonDoFox preference which is responsible for setting the proper version number in your window title. That's why "null" shows up. But not only that: Further preferences of your profile are changed due to the deployment of this tool without your knowledge let alone agreement. E.g., your search engine is set to "Yahoo" and options of other extensions (Adblock, Profileswitcher) are changed. To cut a long story short: it is dangerous to rely on such tools in addition to JonDoFox. And to make it clear: JonDoFox deletes all the surfing traces and data itself during shutdown.

  13. On some web sites I see strange squiggles instead of certain icons. How may I load these graphics again?

    Click on the Noscript Icon, and then in the menu on Settings, Embeddedings. There, please activate Forbid @font-face.

  14. I want to take a look at the JonDoFox feature page once again later on, not only if I install a new profile.

    Just type "about:jondofox" into the URL bar in your browser and press RETURN.

  15. Some browsers have a so called Private Browsing Mode (PBM). Does this interfere with JonDo mode or is it the same?

    It is not the same and it is not recommended to activate it if you want to surf anonymously. E.g. there is no HTTP header normalization and there are other subtleties between both modes that could threaten your anonymity.

  16. How may I update JonDoFox and the extensions shipped with it?

    The recommended method for an update of the JonDoFox profile is to "over-install" the version of JonDoFox installed on your system with the current version. Moreover, when updating single extensions (e.g. JonDoFox) using auto-update, you should normally face no problems as well.

    Also the browser itself may be updated automatically. In case of major version hops, however, it may happen that one or more important extensions do not work any more.

  17. Windows: How may I suppress the splash screen upon start of the USB flash drive version?

    Open the file FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.ini with a text editor and set the entry: DisableSplashScreen = true

  18. How can change the proxy settings in JonDoBrowser?

    Enable the extentended menu in the JonDoFox settings.

  19. How may I uninstall JonDoFox?

    If you have included the profile directly in your Firefox (i.e. if you are not using the portable version), please use the "Delete JonDoFox" link in your Windows start menu. If this link is not there you will find it if you are clicking on "All Programs -> JonDoFox".

    If you are using Linux or MacOS X just use the profile manager. Close Firefox, open a terminal and run: firefox -ProfileManager
