JonDo Error Message

A few weeks ago we started with the roll-out a a new server software on free mix cascades. This new version contains an additionally integrity check to improve security for users of JonDonym. Unfortunately the latest version has a bug which triggers the following error message in JonDo mostly in case of server overload:

In the last two weeks we have had an overload situation on free mix cascades because of outage of the free mix cascade provided by TU Dresden and time by time because of unexpected very high traffic on free cascades. In the last case it may be possible, the overload was the result on an attack by unknown third parties to disturb the operation of mix servers.

We are working together with TU Dresden to fix the bug and together with mix operators to improve the robustness against server overload. We're sorry for any inconvenience.

Bitcoin is a digital currency and it uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority. Therefore, it does not depend on the monetary policy of any central bank, but rather evolves based on the user performing an activity. A long list of merchants accepts bitcoin for payment.

The theoretical roots of Bitcoin can be found in the Austrian school of economics led by Eugen v. Böhm-Bawerk, Ludwig Mises und Friedrich A. Hayek. The economists criticize the current fiat money system and the current money creation process in a fractional-reserve banking system. Friedrich A. Hayek wrote some influential publications like Denationalisation of Money (1976, PDF), in which he claims that governments should not have a monopoly over the issuance of money and for returning to money based on the gold standard.

At the moment Bitcoin is the most popular digital currency inspired by the Austrian scholl of economics. With cryptographic methods the problem of double spending was solved the the total number of available coins is limited. Therefore, it can be used for payment services.

Bitcoin is not perfect and it is discussed controversial, but we decided to support Bitcoin. Since July 2011 it is accept for payment for premium services by JonDos GmbH. Now we offer an anonymous Bitcoin Shop and you may find hints for anonymous administration of your wallet in our onine help.

Update 1: Because of licensing requirements and orders of BaFIN we can offer the Bitcoin shop only for our customers (the user of JonDonym). Please use our anonymisation service to get access to our Bitcoin shop.

Update 2: At the moment the pool of Bitcoins is sold very fast. We are working on a solution to supply the pool with new Bitcoins depending on the selling rate. But it will take a few days.

New JonDo Live-CD / DVD released

The version 0.9.29 is a major release of our live-cd. It is based on Debian "wheezy", offers improved hardware support and contains many bugfixes and other improvements. The new privacyfriendly browser JonDoBrowser is installed for web-surfing.

To meet the wishes of different user groups we offer two versions for download:

The CD version for anonymous internet communication with some small office tools
The DVD version with more office programs, tools for image manipulation, website development...

A new release of the Thunderbird add-on TorBirdy is now out. TorBirdy is the safest way to manage anonymous e-mail accounts with Mozilla Thunderbird together with anonymisation services like JonDonym or Tor but it's still quite experimental.

We recommend the usage of Mozilla Thunderbird for anonymous e-mail accounts and explained the reasons in the former blog post Secure your E-Mail Usage.

The Thunderbird add-on TorBirdy simplifies the configuration of Thunderbird and implements security features for anonymous e-mail usage. We offer a newer version for download with small bugfixes and improvements, which are not available in the TorBirdy release published on the Mozilla add-on page until now. We will launch a new mix server software next time. At first the cascade "Dresden" will switch to the new mix version on next monday morning UTC. The other free mix cascades will follow a few days later and the premium services in the next but one week in case of no problems.

The new mix server software implements an improved protocol with integrity checks recommeded by scientific research at the University Trondheim (Norway). Old JonDo proxy clients below version 0.16.001 will not be able to connect to the mix cascades any more. If you were running an old version, please update your JonDo proxy client. The latest version you may find at the download page.

Important Java Update 1.6.0.26

Oracle has released the security update 1.6.0.26 for Java to fix a number of critical vulnerabilities. Oracle gives 9 of the 17 vulnerabilities a score of 10.0 (highest possible score). The version 5.0 of Java is affected by some of these vulnerabilities too. Security patches for version 5.0 and less are not aviable. An update to the latest Java version is highly recommended!

According to Oracle, some vulnerabilities can be remotely exploited without authentication. At most Windows is affected. A combination of bugs in the JRE and bugs in the operating system can be used to compromise your computer only by visiting a malicious website.

To be protected against drive-by-download attacks with malicious Java applets, PDF documents or Flash applets you may use our JonDoFox. Because of a secure default configuration you are not at risk. If you prefered self configuration of your browser, disable all plugins for execution of Java and other applets and for displaying of PDF documents.

Privacy and Identity Management for Communities - Communities for Privacy and Identity Management

Internet communities are spreading rapidly in all areas of life. For their members, they are central to their social networking and information sharing. In those communities, many elements of identity management are used for fundamental functions. For example, a cross-domain identity management infrastructure is often used to exchange (partial) identities with third party providers in order to generate benefits for those involved. However, this also implies privacy risks, due to the cross-domain exchange of identity information, or due to centralized data processing. The implementation of privacy-friendly technologies has not kept pace with the rapid spread of communities. On the other hand, communities can as well be utilized for improving data privacy. Many successful privacy-enhancing technologies are provided by communities of enthusiasts. They often gather for ideological reasons, to jointly contribute to a better privacy on the Web.

The goal of this workshop is to attract scientists, practitioners, representatives of communities and providers of community platforms to enable an interdisciplinary discussion illuminating this vibrant field of Internet culture.

JonDo 00.14.004: Better usability and speed

Today, JonDos publishes a new version of the JonDo-Software, an IP changer and IP anonymization program, that you can use for anonymous surfing in the Internet.

What's new?
JonDo now contains an assistant that should especially guide new users to a proper setup. It automatically identifies the reason of connection problems and configuration errors, and provides suitable solutions to the user. Guided by an ergonomics study, the user interface has been simplified. The controlling of JonDo was thereby made much more intuitive. Additionally, the anti censorship function has been enhanced and was made easier to access. The censorship circumvention included in JonDo helps people from countries where parts of the Internet are blocked to get free access to information. Moreover, the new version of JonDo is significantly faster in updating and processing network information and contains many enhancements in details and error corrections.

JonDoFox 2.5.0: Anonymous E-Mail post boxes and compatibility with Firefox 4

Today, the JonDos GmbH publishes the new version of JonDoFox, a privacy-friendly web browser, that you may also use for anonymous surfing, e.g. over anonymous proxy servers.

JonDoFox is both a profile (current version: 2.5.0) and an extension (current version: 0.2.8 ) for the popular Mozilla Firefox web browser. It protects the user's privacy while surfing the web. As it is open source software and free to use, it is an ideal add-on for anonymization services like JonDonym and Tor, but may also be used without anonymization software.
